Chinese :: Dumpling Kingdom

November 23, 2017

Just like lunch today, we didn't have many options for tonight's dinner as most restaurants were closed for Thanksgiving. After driving through Brookline and Allston, we finally spotted Dumpling Kingdom open and buzzing with 'stranded' customers like us.
We were first-timers at Dumpling Kingdom and had no idea what to order! After much deliberation, we ended up picking their mala special pot and customized with Enoki mushroom, Shiitake mushroom, Bok Choy and fish slices at medium spicy. The chef kind of also decided to add some pieces of tender pork belly and leek with the numbing pepper, making the dish a pretty interesting textural experience. It was a pity the dish came too spicy for our taste buds though, leaving us tearing and sniffling throughout the meal and unfortunately unable to enjoy the other flavors in the dish.
Since this place is called the Dumpling Kingdom, we also ordered a basket of Xiao Long Bao (Soup dumpling). It came juicy and tender - there was so much soup that I had trouble keeping it from bursting out of my mouth! The pork was a bit too salty for my liking though but overall I think it was a good change from the spicy explosion we had with the mala special pot.
The staff here were attentive, friendly and efficient. Being one of the rare restaurants open on Thanksgiving Day, the staff were pretty overwhelmed with a big customer crowd. However, it was not hard to get their attention whenever we needed anything and service was fast too. We may return to try something else the next time!
